KAWOMENAN
WINTER 1997
STOP 100 YEARS
OF SERVITUDE! In 1998, the people of the United States and the world will commemorate a very important event: the centennial of the Philippine-American War. The centennial also marks U.S. expansion to the Pacific and Caribbean, taking over Cuba, Guam, Hawaii, the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Samoa. The conditions leading up to the Philippine-American War and its aftermath are key to understanding twentieth century U.S. expansionist and foreign policies, negatively affecting millions of Philippine people today, particularly women. As we face the upcoming centennial, people from the Philippines and other territories are still continuing to fight for economic, social and political justice. GabNet NY will host the regional conference marking the centennial for U.S. colonization of the Philippines. The Stop 100 Years of Servitude conference will be held from June 12-14, 1998 in New York City at a venue to be determined. Registration takes place on Friday, June 12, 5-7 p.m. followed by a cultural performance or film. Focusing on the continuing impact of U.S. imperialism on the Philippines, the conference aims to educate participants and encourage activism against imperialist policies. Advance registration begins in January 1998.
